Wuskwatim Access Road

Construction of a new 48-kilometre, all-weather access road from Provincial Road 391 to the construction site began August 11, 2006.

The gravel-surfaced road is being built to high design and load standards to accommodate the volumes, weights and sizes of materials that must be transported to the dam site. Single and double corrugated metal culverts will be used under the roadway at each of the nine stream crossings.  Gravel deposits identified along the route are being used for both road and generating station construction.

Minimizing environmental impact was an important consideration in route selection and ongoing environmental monitoring is part of the construction process. Also, as specified in the Project Development Agreement, traditional cultural ceremonies are being held to mark significant milestones during construction, such as stream crossings.
